10 Things Millennials Can Do In Memphis

Music, sports and BBQ — you gotta love Memphis! I hear from my fellow millennials all of the time that there is “nothing to do in Memphis.” However, there are plenty of things to do in Memphis if you get out more and broaden your horizons.

Here are list of fun and [positive] things millennials can do in Memphis:

1.) Explore the Cooper Young Area – Known as the “Historically Hip” area in Memphis, the Cooper Young area is a very artsy district in Memphis where you can shop, eat, workout, listen to music and then some. Every year in September, The Cooper Young community hosts its annual Cooper Young Festival, which includes live entertainment, food trucks, and vendors. 2.) Join the Memphis Urban Leauge Young Professionals (MULYP) – As a local chapter of the National Urban League Young Professionals, the MULYP is a service-orientated leadership organization that supports the advancement of young professionals in the Memphis area. The organization hosts a slew of events throughout the year including workshops, fellowship events, luncheons and conferences. 3.) Join the New Memphis Institute – What was first known as Goals For Memphis, the New Memphis Institute is a leadership organization that designed for Memphians and new residents to use their talents to better the city. 4.) Volunteer – Whether it is through your school, church, Greek-lettered organization or wherever else, it is always a great thing to be a blessing to others. You can volunteer by helping out at MIFA, your neighborhood church, donating non-perishable items wherever needed or simply devote your time helping someone else.

5.) Patronize and Support Local Businesses – From restaurants to clothing stores, Memphis start ups are on the rise. However, they cannot stand without the support of its residents. 6.) Mentor Memphis Youth – It’s no surprise that the youth in Memphis need some guidance. You can help mentor youth through the Grizzlies TEAM Mentoring Program, Youth Villages and many other mentoring programs in Memphis. After all, the children were our future, right?

7.) Attend a Game – The Memphis Grizzlies, the Memphis Redbirds and the Memphis Tigers  and the prominent teams in Memphis. If you’re a sports fanatic, go to a game during their seasons. Not a major-league sports fan? No problem, got to a high-school or college football game near you.

8.) Visit the Museums – From the Civil Rights Movement to Rhythm and Blues, the city of Memphis has a lot of history. Take some time to learn more about Memphis’ contributions to history by visiting the Civil Rights Museum, Blues Museum, Fire Museum, Graceland and many more museums.

9.) Club Hop – Memphis has a flourishing party scene and there are great clubs in the city that are not your typical hole in the walls. Clubs like Reign, Club 152, LOVE, Dream and many others have become the premiere hotspots in the city with the with the hottest celebrities hosting the hottest parties in town. Remember, always go in pairs or as a group and be aware of your surroundings when going out.

10.) Go to the Theater – The Overton Square Theatre Arts District in Memphis brings an artsy, creative flavor to the city. For African-American plays, check out a play at the new Hattiloo Theatre and for ballet and dance, visit Ballet Memphis and Ballet On Wheels. You can also see broadway plays at the Orpheum Theatre and Playhouse on the Square. You can check other plays and performances at The Circuit Playhouse, Theatre, and a few other theaters.
