That’s Ridiculous!

question the answer

The journey down the road of the ridiculous is a lonely trail. There is absolutely no corroborating evidence to substantiate your position. There is not one shred of logic to affirm your claim.  You take a look around and there are very few, if any, to cheer you on, or offer any kind of support. As a matter of fact, you have often been taunted and laughed at for having such absurd notions that you are “blessed.” People wonder how you could be so naïve. “That’s ridiculous,” they would say.  Your ideas, your thoughts, defy logic.

Many come from the same reasoning as those from Missouri, the “Show me state,” and the “I have to see it to believe it” mentality.

People have not only survived, but have flourished under extreme conditions. They have overcome situations where favorable results seemed beyond the scope of possibility. However, something this outlandish sometimes implies that maybe, just maybe there’s a very minute chance that you think…you might get a break, or be blessed.

Impossible suggests there is no promising, foreseeable, outcome.  Ridiculous implies, “Don’t even think about it.” Many come from the same reasoning as those from Missouri, the “Show me state,” and the “I have to see it to believe it” mentality. Yet, how many times have you been on the verge of giving up, throwing in the towel, or have lost all hope and suddenly, there was an unexpected blessing?

You live in a house for an entire year with no mortgage being paid and no sign of foreclosure.

You retire, with no retirement fund..

A household of three is supported on one hundred and fifty dollars a month, with no public assistance.

A man leaves his wife for another woman and he becomes seriously ill. The deserted wife goes and gets her husband from the woman and nurses him back to health.

You accumulated an enormous amount in medical bills and received debt cancellation for well over two hundred thousand dollars, with nominal fees remaining.

That’s ridiculous!

The statement, “A household of three was supported on one hundred and fifty dollars a month, with no public assistance,” was discussed between three individuals and the conversation went something like this:

The first person said, “That’s ridiculous! How could that happen?”

The response was, “I told you, some people think the things of God are ridiculous.”

The second person replied, “I know, but how did it happen?”

The answer was, “Through the power of God and His Holy Spirit.”

The comment was made, “Okay, I hear what you are saying, but that doesn’t make any sense,”

The reply, “The answer is still the same, it was only by the power of God and His Holy Spirit. The answer doesn’t change because you don’t believe it.”

One person finally admitted, “It had to be a miracle!”

The last statement was, “That’s exactly what I’ve been telling you.”

Ridiculous defies understanding by the natural mind and goes beyond the realm of human comprehension. How do we get past believing what we can’t see, to embracing notions that appear so unbelievable? How do we cast off the normal reaction of crying, worrying and complaining to focusing on God for the answer? I Peter 5:6-7 says, Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Humbling ourselves means to relinquish all external and internal controls to let go and let God. Why is casting our cares on the Lord so difficult? Some people have been convinced by the world that they are self-actualized and in control of their destiny.

How do we know with certainty that what we need, what we hope for is within our grasp, if we just …what? Believe. Trust. Obey.

What’s the criterion to live and thrive in defiance of the worldview? How do we know with certainty that what we need, what we hope for is within our grasp, if we just …what? Believe. Trust. Obey. Or, is that ridiculous! 1 Corinthians 2: 9-10 (NIV), However as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” but, God has revealed it to us by His Spirit. So, that explains how Joshua won the battle at Jericho not by making war cries, raising their voices, or saying a word. They were obedient and marched around the wall for six days. Then on the seventh day, the trumpets were blown, the people shouted and the wall collapsed. By the human eye and reasoning, that’s ridiculous! What about the King being born to a poor, virgin, peasant girl?  How about five thousand people are fed with a little boy’s lunch, two fish and five loaves of bread with leftovers, or a woman giving her very last food to a complete stranger, who later brought her only son back to life. With orders from the Savior of the world, the first miracle was performed by changing water into wine at a wedding.  “Are you kidding me?” As an old song states, “God specializes in things that seem impossible. He can do what no other power can do.”

Who believes in miracles anymore? Only people who believe, have experienced the wondrous work of the Lord, the supernatural unveiling of His love and grace and those who can see and acknowledge the movement of  Almighty God, can recognize His miraculous power. I Corinthians 2: 10b-14, (NIV).The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

So, that’s how the transformation unfolds.  That’s how we can see, hear, conceive and receive all the things God has for us. We don’t have to grope blindly in darkness, guessing about the things of God. That’s how we move from what appears to be preposterous, absurd, outlandish, bizarre and unreasonable. The things of God are no longer ridiculous. We now embrace the reality of God’s truth, mercy, grace, peace, love, obedience and faith… to experiencing His miracles.

  1. There are many things that are ridiculous, but the things of God don’t fall into that category. God is a miracle worker and it’s because of those miracles that I have been able to come through many difficulties in my life.
